Eating out
- The Mason’s Arms, Bowland Bridge is one mile from Bridge House, the Masons’ arms is more of a restaurant than a pub and serves seriously good grub, using locally produced, wholesome ingredients.
- The Hare and Hounds, Bowland Bridge is a cosy, friendly local pub that has a good variety of beer on tap. There is a lovely garden and the food is reasonably priced considering how delicious it is! A footpath takes you right to the door step of Bridge House from the Hare and Hounds.
- The Punch Bowl at Crothswaite is a short drive from Bridge House and is a superb gastro pub. It is managed by the same owners as the well known Drunken Dunk pub in Ambleside.
- The Lyth Valley Hotel is a 45 minutes walk from the cottage or a 10 minute drive.
- The Derby Arms, Witherslack. An excellent pub/restaurant just a few miles down the valley from Bridge House.
Shops
- Bowland Bridge has an excellent village shop, while Grange-over-sands is a lively little town with several shops including an award winning butcher, bakers and co-op.
- Both Windermere and Kendal have excellent supermarkets.
- Over the hills, the town of Windermere is 7 miles from the cottage.
Things to do while at Bridge House
Walking
Local Walks - There are lots of lovely circular walks of varying lengths and gradients from the doorstep of the cottage. You can choose to walk through the woods and fields towards Simpson Ground, on the limestone pavement of Whitbarrow Scar or in the Winster Valley. Gummers How makes an easy hike for a family day out and gives fantastic views of Lake Windermere from the top. There are plenty of maps available to borrow at the cottage.
Walks further a field - Alternatively those looking for a bigger challenge the Lake District's famous mountains such as Coniston Old Man, The Langdale Pikes, Seat Sandal and Scar Fell Pike are in close proximity.

With quiet roads in the Lyth and Winster valleys there are plenty of safe tarmac roads and rough tracks to cycle. Although there are some hills to contend with you can enjoy the ride down on the other side!
